How do hotels get their star ratings?

Q) I stayed in a hotel in the UK last month, it was supposedly a 5 star hotel but it wasn't any better than a Travel Lodge. How do these hotels get the ratings? How often are they assessed? This hotel was friendly and service was great but there was no bath, only a shower, no swimming pool, gym or anything like that. Room was spacious but dated.

A) I'm not sure of the official way it gets done, but it tends to be if a hotel has, bar, restaurant, pool, gym, room service, sauna, and good location they tend to get a 5* rating, even though the furnishings may be very dated and a bit scruffy, where as a hotel that has no pool, gym etc may only be rated as a 3 star and be very nice inside. Best bet, check out trip advisor and the hotels website before you book!

Can people recommend good value hotels in Manhattan and must see and do things in NY/surrounding area?

Q) To mark getting on with my life after months spent getting over my wife leaving me, I am packing a rucksack and flying to New York - no pre-booking hotels for me! I am spending 8 days and would love peoples tips and advice, especially on where to stay (not too expensive, but reasonable quality) and what are real must see's? Am also think about hiring a car and heading to new hampshire for a few days - any tips? Thanks in advance all!

A) The Belvedere Hotel. 48th Street, 8th Ave. It is across the road from Broadway, If you walk up the little road from the Hotel you end up on Times Sqaure, 10 mins from Central Park. I have stayed there all the times i've been to NY and i love the hotel. It is cheap and great for a NY hotel! http://www.belvederehotelnyc.com/ The Hilton Garden Inn It's pretty much in the same location as the Belvedere but on the main road. It is also around the same price. http://www.belvederehotelnyc.com/ There is a hostel in Manhatten, Not sure where. But here is the link for the website:- http://www.bigapplehostel.com/ Places to see! Where do you start? 1.) Go up either the Rockefeller Center Or Empire State! Amazing views! Approx $18.00/ $20.00 2.) A walk around Central Park/ Bike Ride/ Horse + Cart ride. 3.) Visit Ground Zero Museam + The Site. (World Trade Center) 4.) Take a boat trip around the Statue Of Liberty. It goes right up to the Statue so you can get good photos and it slows down then it goes around the sky line of NY + under one of the bridges and turns around, It doesn't let you get off at the statue, if you want to do that then get the other boat but you are stuck on the island for 45 mins, there is nothing else there (not good if cold + wet) Otherwise get the boat that goes around the Statue. 5.) Visit Times Square at day + night 6.) Go see a show on broadway (maybe) 7.) Shopping! 8.) Museams? Lots by Central Park. 9.) Take the 'Hop On Hop Off Bus'' And do the night tour on there it goes over the Manhatten Bridge to Brooklyn and you can watch the sun set over the skyline- amazing! You can also just hop on the bus anywhere and it will go around the city (two buses for upper + lower NY) it's good ticket is vaild for 48 hours cost about $48.00 but it;s worth it for a first time in NY. There is a grey line bus tour shop on Times Sqaure and you can get free maps, brochers and they have monthly booklets of what is happening in the city that month and other little bits in there. Good luck with everything and i hope you have a great trip!!

Can you please recommend reasonably priced hotels in London?

Q) I am planning a 7-day trip to London with wife and daughter in May 2007, and am looking for reasonably priced hotel accommodation in decent localities. Can you please recommend some decent and safe hotels (suitable for a couple in their 50's and a 22 year old daughter from India) priced about 70 UKP per night for the three of us? What localities would you recommend I concentrate my search on? The results on the net are quite mind-boggling.

A) The Strand Palace is cheap, but its apparantly terrible. A place to stay and that's it. Oh and a good location. But noisy, not clean, etc. Though again it is cheap. It's hard to get a nice good cheap hotel room in London. A quick look at tripadvisor.com brought these up as under 100 pounds per night and highly rated. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review?geo=186338&detail=214658&from=Home&inMonth=01/2007&inDay=10&outMonth=01/2007&outDay=17&adults=2&hs=hac01w:10023 http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review?geo=186338&detail=287288&from=Home&inMonth=01/2007&inDay=10&outMonth=01/2007&outDay=17&adults=2&hs=hac01w:10023 http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review?geo=186338&detail=192068&from=Home&inMonth=01/2007&inDay=10&outMonth=01/2007&outDay=17&adults=2&hs=hac01w:10023 Goodluck and check out sites like expedia.com

Where should I look for summer jobs at europe hotels?

Q) Hello. Does anyone of you know where to search for a summer job at Hotels in Spain,France,Greece or other South European countries?(For job as event organizer and evening program organizer, animator.) Do you know any web addresses?

A) I think your best bet is to check the large job sites with different country sites i.e. http://www.stepstone.com and http://www.monster.com You could also check the large hotel chains and their contacts and job pages, i.e. Hilton etc.

I would love to work in posh hotels like hilton /The Ritz . How do i apply since my visa is still 5mths left?

Q) i have previous work experiences in 5star hotels, trying to get into posh UK hotels to get work experiences before getting back. Any feedbacks welcome.

A) No hotel of the quality you are looking for will employ you. First thing they will ask for is your work permit. If you don't have one, forget it as your employer can be jailed for employing you against Immigration rules. Secondly, with only 5 months left on what I assume is a social visa, you have no right to employment anyway.

How do I check lots of London hotels en masse for a guest?

Q) A relative of mine has gone AWOL in London and I'm pretty sure she's in a London hotel. Travelodge let me check all of their hotels at the same time; who else will let me check lots of hotels en masse?

A) Doesn't she have any right to privacy ? If she's a minor it could be a police matter, but otherwise I'd be horrified if hotels aided this kind of stalking.

Are there any good websites out there for finding hotels near concert venues?

Q) I'm regularly go to gigs across the uk, especially in London (O2 Arena), Cardiff (Millennium Stadium) and Manchester (MEN Arena), and always find it difficult to find good hotels close to the venue - I want to find a website that shows me exactly what I'm looking for, without having to guess the distances from the venue - any ideas?

A) Got just the site (I've been using for quite some time now, for similar situations) for ya. Head over to http://www.resideo.com/gb/ and click the city that you need to stay at. Then click the "Check Availability" button, choose your dates & submit the form. When the results appear, choose the 'distance' dropdown and select the venue from the list -- the places with available rooms will re-order, putting closest first (and show you how many miles away each hotel is from the selected place). Might not work for every location, but it's worth a shot! Hope that helps!

Hotels??????

Q) Why is it that in searches for hotels, you have to have adults to be able to enter kids, but ive stayed in a hotel room without any adults in that room . How do you know if the hotel allows that? Also, I know hotels will let you use cots so you can all stay in on room, whats the limit of people to a room?

A) I've worked in hotels for seven years and I'm pretty sure most are the same. You are legally supposed to have an adult in a room. Some hotels the age to get a room is 18, others it's 21. I know sometimes parents will get a seperate room for the kids. That's fine as long as they're not trouble. The reason you have to enter in a number of adults (besides what I just said) is just because that's how hotel computer systems are set up. As far as the limit to the number of people in a room, you have to ask the individual hotel that. There are fire codes that come into play and it all depends on the size of the room.

What hotels are good to stay in in vegas?

Q) I'm going to be going to Vegas for my 21st birthday in a year (generic i know) and i was wondering what are some good hotels on the strip that are affordable but clean? I have read about the Flamingo and wanted to know if anyone has stayed there and has any comments about their stay? Anybody have any other suggestions as to what hotels may be good? Thanks a bunch! Sorry GSpin I accidently gave a thumbs down rating to your answer, I meant to do a thumbs up lol! Yours was the best answer, thanks

A) Hi, I have nothing but good things to say about The Flamingo. It is by far my favorite hotel on Las Vegas for Overall Value. Anyway here's a review I wrote about it on Yelp.com I'll start off with the bad first: we came in early around noon, and were told to come back around 3 pm to get our keys. We came back at 3 pm, they said come back at 4 pm cus the room wasn't ready. That's okay cus technically check-in time is 4 pm. Came back at 4 pm and was told the room wouldn't be ready for 30-45 minutes....we asked for a manager. Our room was ready in 10 minutes, and he gave us a $30 coupon to use at the bar or gift shop. So that's decently fair. Anyway Flamingo's location is quite possibly the best on the strip. Right smack dab in the middle, what more could you ask for? The distance from room to elevator to the strip was real short unlike so many other casinos where it's an absolute chore to get from your room to the strip or vice versa. And I like how when you walk out of the casino..you're right on the sidewalk...there's no long ass escalator/path you have to take to get to the sidewalk. I mean wow. We also liked the rooms considering we got the upgrade Go! Rooms that are newly remodeled, and look nothing like the outside of the casino (which is starting to show it's age pretty badly). The beds were big, clean, and comfy. Huge ass 42" LCD TV, a TV in the bathroom mirror, a separate shower and tub. The shower also had some body jets which was nice. No problems with the water temp. or pressure. I'm used to staying in standard rooms or Vegas or even sh*t holes like Tropicana...this was anything but that. Service: I didn't like how they couldn't guarantee my dry cleaning would get to me in the 6-8 pm slot that it said on the bag, but it did arrive on time. The cleaning ladies did a decent job, and didn't steal anything so that's also good. And when we called for our bags, extra glasses, and hangers..they were quickly brought up (very quickly)..that's good. Casino: The theme is losing it's touch, but it's still decently nice inside. It's not Bellagio, it's not O'Sheas either. Drinks take a little while to get to you, but I think I was up a couple hundred in this casino, and my buddy won $2,000 w/the lucky lady jackpot on the blackjack table...plus they had $5 and $10 tables during busy times..that works for me. Pool: Really nice, I came a little late so no staff or bar was to be found...but I'm sure in the hotter days it'd be excellent. View: my two rooms had amazing views. One had a good view of the pool, and the other had amazing view of the Bellagio fountains. Price: I originally booked the Go! rooms directly through Flamingo for $590 each plus tax for Friday & sat night. Then I cancelled and rebooked them for $610...why you may ask. Because I found a cheaper rate of $540 on Orbitz. Due to their Best Rate Guarantee..they not only matched the cheaper rate, but they dropped it 25%. Our rooms now were a little under $400 for the weekend per room. Sounds like a great deal to me. Overall: Other a few slight quirks here and there. I can't give Flamingo any less than 5 stars. I'm sure it'd be different if we paid more and/or were stuck with a standard room. But considering of our group we paid $100 each for the room here, compared to the $70 each at Tropicana or $90 each for Bally's. I definitely will say Flamingo was well-worth the little extra money for the room quality and strip location. I'd highly recommend Flamingo's Go! Rooms to anyone who wants a great value on the strip. Link: http://www.yelp.com/biz/flamingo-las-vegas-las-vegas#hrid:oks-EjH9ALXUGAlnmIH3jA ~G p.s. Other suggestions: Ballys for the same price range. also affordable, great locaiton, clean. Stay away from Tropicana it's garbage. anyway great websites: www.yelp.com - real reviews by real people www.cheapovegas.com - critics reviews but gives reviews on the casinos, their service, clientele, rooms, pool, etc.

How come some Hotels in Orlando require someone to be 21, and others 18?

Q) I'm going to Universal Studios in March for Vaca. I checked with the on-site hotels, you have to be 21 to rent a room. Some off site hotels also require you to be 21. I finally found a not so nice budget motel but the reviews were horrible. Then I had to call and call and finally found the Comfort Inn Universal Studios Area. I called them and the man told me you have to be 18, So I booked the room. I'm 20 right now. But how come some require 21 and some 18?

A) I do not know the hotels of which you speak, but on average, a hotel with a bar increases minimum age to meet the drinking age.

What hotels near Yankee Stadium would you recommend for a low-moderate budget?

Q) Planning a trip to Yankee Stadium next year that I am trying to get a jump start on planning for. I just want to know what hotels in the area others would recommend. I dont want to spend too much, but im not strapped for cash.

A) you could stay in jersey. either ft lee or in weehawken. if you stay in weehawken get a place near the ferry and take the ferry to the game.

What are the differences of hotels before and hotels nowadays?

Q) Hey! I just wanna know what kind of services hotels back then offered that hotels these days still do offer or stuffs that old hotels used to serve and are now considered as obsolete services by new hotels, it could also be that only a few hotels are still offering those stuffs or they still have it but in a different way...Any answer would really help thank you. has anybody tried staying in one of Paris' hotels? what was it like?XD

A) Besides the Bible, hotels today offer Internet service or state-of-the-art technology which old hotels didn't have. Other security such as key-card room, 24-hour CCTV security surveillance system, international Direct Dial (IDD) telephone through optic-fibre cable. I never understood why they even have Bible in the hotel because if people want to have affairs, they'd be too busy doing something else rather than look for the bible :-) Other services such as spa & fitness-center, beauty salon and several shops, baby sitter on request, recent release movie pay channels, large screen plasma televisions, Wedding/Meeting/Banquets, concierge service that older hotels may not have.

How do hotels and restaurants keep their dishes so clean?

Q) How do hotels and restaurants keep their dishes so clean? I heard from someone that they use bleach or something similar?

A) there is bleachlike solid in the dishtank but they have commercial dishtanks that reach very high temps. They also have solution that they soak dishes in when they begin to stain. You can add a cap full of bleach to your dishwater and it will help to remove the stains. Most places don't allow bleach anymore because of the risks of mixing chemicals. I just add bleach to my dishwasher usually a cup and it helps.

How do hotels maintain such crisp linen? I just purchased some sateen sheets and the instructions said to iron

Q) and I thought, "HA!" Well I pulled them out of the dryer and they are an awful mess. I've never ironed sheets before. These are king sized sheets and my attempt at ironing proved time consuming and ackward due to the size of the sheets. I used starch too but I can't imagine doing this every week. Does anyone have any tips and I guess hotels really do pay someone to IRON all of those sheets?! How do you keep your sheets dewrinkled and beautiful?

A) Hotels, or their linnen services, have very large presses instead of irons and can iron a sheet flat in two shots. The easiest method I can recomend is to hang your linnens instead of tumble drying. Takes more time, but much easier to get the few remaining wrinkles out.

Can somebody tell me whether these hotels are in a good area in San Francisco?

Q) Hello, I am planning to spend a few days in San Francisco, but I cannot decide which of these two hotels I should take and whether they are in a safe/ good area of San Francisco or not. Is the Adante Hotel in a safe area of San Francisco? It is located in 610 Geary Street. The other hotel is called La Luna Inn and it is located in 2599 Lombard Steet. Is a cable car station close to that hotel and ore the main sights good reachable from that hotel? It would be nice if somebody who have stayed in one these hotel could tell me whether it is a good/ nice hotel and whether it is recommendable. Thanks!

A) La Luna is pretty far away from everything, except it's walking distance to the Presidio and Palace of Fine Arts (and easy driving access to the Golden Gate Bridge). You'd have to take a bus to connect with a cable car. It's a pretty safe area of town, but busy traffic-wise. Adante is in an OK part of town. Just stay east and north of the area. Easy access to public transportation (many Geary buses) and you're just a few blocks away from cable car access at Union Square.

Will Disneyland Hotels bring your Souvenirs you buy in the park back to your room?

Q) I had read somewhere, doing research for a family vacation, that Disneyland Resort hotels (Disneyland hotel, Paradise Pier or the Grand Californian) will allow you to buy souvenirs in the park and they will put them in your hotel room for you. Is this still true? Has the option changed? Any information to support this claim would be greatly appreciated.

A) yes. the last time i was there which was november, you could. we stayed at the grand californian and it was really nice not having to carry everything around. have fun at d.land (:

Are there any hotels outside NYC that have a free shuttle to the city?

Q) We are planning a weekend trip to NYC and I see that there is a huge price difference in staying in the city and out of the city (duh!). Do any of the hotels near the airports offer a free shuttle into the city or do we have to take a cab? I need recommendations on where to stay. We may be coming up via Amtrack, but we haven't decided yet.

A) check in the Poconos now that they have casinos they might offer service
